Episode #20- Navigating School Anxiety with Sarah & Shonda
In this episode, we will be discussing coping with anxiety as kids head back to school for Fall 2021. The past 18 months has been filled with challenges, and the COVID-19 pandemic has given us a new conception of normalcy. That’s especially true for schools, which switched to virtual learning almost overnight back in March 2020. This was an adjustment that was harder for some than others. But now, with vaccines available and schools opening up, many parents, students, and teachers are bracing for the 2020-2021 school year. While getting back to in-person learning, students can be filled with a variety of emotions including excitement and anxiety. Some may be overjoyed to see their friends and teachers in person, while others struggle with the change and are uncertain about their social relationships after having been on pause for 18 months. For parents, there is fear about the spread of the delta variant, and the continual balancing of the pros and cons of sending kids back to school weighs heavily. Children and teens benefit from learning and interacting with their peers in person, but COVID-19 is still a risk.

Learning Objectives

  1. Formulate effective interventions that allow school aged individuals to explore cognitive distortions related to anxiety.
  2. Identify symptoms of separation anxiety and social anxiety as it relates to returning to school.
  3. Apply strategies to support parents in navigating anxiety in school aged children.
